Area Health Education Center (UM AHEC)

”Opening the doors to healthcare …through education, medical service, and innovation”

UM AHEC was formed over two decades ago to link the resources of the University of Miami’s academic medical center with medically underserved communities in South Florida. Since then, more than 50,000 medically underserved men, women and children each year have received high-quality medical care at AHEC-affiliated training sites in the Florida Keys and Miami-Dade County. Under the sponsorship of UM AHEC, faculty/student teams from area medical, nursing and allied health programs spend almost 150,000 hours yearly training and providing medical services in sites serving recently arrived immigrants, migrant farm workers, homeless families, isolated populations in the Florida Keys, and in other diverse communities in the region.

In addition to providing medical care through student training opportunities, UM AHEC also sponsors the following activities to improve the health of the region’s neediest communities:

  • Health fairs that not only provide screening services, but link participants to health care providers in their community;
  • Community health educational programs in Spanish, Creole and English to help thousands of youngsters and their elders on the road to better health;
  • Development of multi-lingual health materials to meet the needs of South Florida’s diverse blend of cultures, languages and belief systems;
  • Educational programs to prepare health care practitioners and vulnerable population groups for natural disasters, acts of terrorism and public health emergencies;
  • On-going training of lay community health workers to work within their own churches, schools, clinics and community organizations to promote better health for their neighbors;
  • Health Career Pipeline programs such as the Hometown Recruitment Project that encourage minority and disadvantaged young people to purse healthcare careers to build a diverse medical work force for South Florida’s multicultural communities.
